Shahrukh Khan was born Taj Mohammed Khan and Lateef Fatima in New Delhi, India. He has an elder sister by the name of Shehnaz. SRK attended the St. Columba’s School in Delhi where he excelled in sports, drama and academics. He was a brilliant student and the perfect all rounder. He was even the captain of school football, cricket and hockey team. It was after getting injured at a football game that he seriously thought of pursuing acting as a career. Such was his achievements at the St. Columba’s School that he was even awarded the prestigious “Sword of Honour” title that was awarded annually to the one student who represented the spirit of the school successfully.
SRK graduated in Economic honors from Hansraj College and later did his masters in mass communication from the Jamia Miliya Islamia University. After his masters, Shahrukh then went forward to pursue theater actively under the guidance of Mr. Barry John. It was Mr. Barry John who said that SRK had the perfect combination of “talent, perseverance, self belief, never-give-up attitude and a bit of luck” to become a successful actor.
Early Career
It was after the death of his parents that SRK decided to move from New Delhi to Mumbai. In the year 1991, before any of his films were even released, Shahrukh Khan tied the knot with his long time girl friend Gauri Chibber, who was a Hindu. Though SRK faced a number of problems from Gauri’s parents due to the difference in their religions, SRK himself has been quite liberal when it came to faith and religion.
SRK made his first Bollywood debut with the film Deewana in 1992. Fortunately this movie became a box office hit and SRK’s career in Bollywood took off pretty well. He even won the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award for his performance in Deewana. In 1993 he performed an explicit sex scene in the movie Maya Memsaab that generated a bit of controversy. The year 1993 also saw SRK exploring his first grey shades. In the film Darr SRK essayed the role of an obsessive lover while in Baazigar he portrayed the role of a murderer. Both these films were box office hits and shocked the audience with their unconventional portraying of the hero. This was followed by the film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa where he played the role of a young musician. With these three roles SRK made his intentions pretty clear i.e. he is here to rule the Bollywood film industry.
DDLJ and after years
SRK was destined to create history and he was successful in creating in. The year 1995 saw the release of two of the biggest hits of the year. First there was Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun and then there was Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. DDLJ, a rom-com became India’s biggest movie blockbusters of all time, earning more than 12 billion rupees in India and abroad. It is considered to be a trendsetter. A theater in Mumbai has been showing this movie right from the time it got released in 1995, thus making it the longest running movie in history. Post DDLJ, SRK acted in a number of Bollywood films many of which went on to become box office hits and were also critically acclaimed. These include Pardes, Dil to Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil Se and Baadsah
2000 onwards
In the year 2000 SRK acted in Mohabbatein. The role of a college teacher earned him his second Filmfare Award for the Best Actor. 2000 onwards, SRK donned a new age look. His next films included Josh, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Ashoka the Great, Devdas, Chalte Chalte, Main Hoon Na, Veer Zaara, Paheli and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. Many of these films achieved international success as well.
In 2006, SRK played the title role in the remake of 1978 film Don. The film was titled Don: The Chase Begins Again. This role transformed SRK into the new age Don. In 2007 SRK delivered perhaps the best performance of his life when he played the role of Kabir Khan, an ousted national hockey player who went on to coach the Indian women’s hockey team to a championship victory.
In 2010, SRK played the role of Rizwan Khan, a Muslim man who suffers from the Asperger syndrome. This role earned SRK the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for a record eighth number of times. The year 2011 is one of the memorable years for SRK. His dream project Ra.One was released on October 26, 2011 that went on to become the second highest grossing Bollywood film worldwide. It won the Filmfare Award for the Best Visual Effects and also won numerous awards across the globe for its visual effects. The visual effects of Ra.One were handled by Red Chillies VFX, owned by SRK. This movie involved a number of software like Nuke, Shake, Maya and Houdini. There were as many as 3,500 VFX shots that surpassed the number of shots used in Avatar.
The other milestone of 2011 was the release of Don 2. In his entire acting career spanning about two decades this was the first time where SRK acted in a sequel. This movie also saw SRK once again essaying the role of a villain since the remake of Don was released in 2006. Released in 2D as well as 3D formats, Don 2 became the highest grosser on a Friday which is a non-holiday. The two back to back releases in 2011 once again catapulted SRK’s image in the Bollywood industry.
